Three Musavat Party Activists Sentenced to Prison for “Group Hooliganism”

Three members of the opposition Musavat Party have been sentenced to prison in what the party describes as a politically motivated ruling. According to a statement released on Musavat’s official Facebook page, the Baku court sentenced:

  • Aladdin Alasgarli and Cabir Valiyev to 2 years and 3 months
  • Goshgar Nurali to 2 years
All three were convicted under charges of hooliganism committed by a group.

The charges stem from an incident following a New Year’s event organized by the Musavat Party’s Bilasuvar district branch on December 31, 2023. The party claims the event was deliberately disrupted and that the confrontation was a provocation orchestrated against their activists.

Musavat’s statement emphasizes that during the incident, Aladdin Alasgarli sustained physical injuries, which were later confirmed by official forensic examination. However, while the alleged provocateur was only fined, the three Musavat activists were handed prison sentences without substantial grounds.

“This ruling is a continuation of state repression,” the party declared, demanding the immediate release of Alasgarli, Valiyev, and Nurali.

Musavat leaders and international observers have frequently voiced concern over the increasing use of politically motivated prosecutions against members of opposition parties and civil society.
