The Death of Elgun Ibrahimov: A Tragic Fall or a Covered-Up Crime?

Tensions grew when local activist Nijat Amiraslanov was arrested and sentenced to 15 days for “petty hooliganism” after distributing pamphlets about the case.

17-year-old high school student Elgun Ibrahimov died under suspicious circumstances in Ganja. While authorities claim he fell accidentally from a building, his family and local activists insist he was beaten to death. The lack of transparency and the detention of activists raising awareness have sparked concerns of a possible cover-up.

On May 13, 2025, Elgun Ibrahimov, an 11th-grade student from Ganja, was declared dead due to multiple injuries reportedly caused by a fall from an abandoned dormitory building. A joint statement by the General Prosecutor’s Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs, and State Security Service asserted that there were no signs of violence and ruled out the involvement of others.

However, Elgun’s family strongly disputes this version. His uncle, Rovshan Zeynalov, speaking at the funeral, stated: “His skull was shattered. This is brutality. Those who beat him must be punished.”

Authorities claim Elgun spent time with friends earlier that day, bought cigarettes, and went alone to the building where he allegedly fell. Yet, many question the credibility of the investigation, especially as it lacks public evidence such as security footage or witness testimony being released.

Tensions grew when local activist Nijat Amiraslanov was arrested and sentenced to 15 days for “petty hooliganism” after distributing pamphlets about the case. His supporters believe he was targeted for raising awareness.

Human rights defenders argue that the state’s response to Elgun’s death is neither transparent nor accountable. Without a thorough, independent investigation, many fear the truth behind the teenager’s death may be deliberately hidden.
