Posters and banners featuring Ekrem İmamoğlu have been banned

In addition, the use of materials containing his photo, video and voice on public transport has been banned

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has banned posters and banners featuring former mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested as part of an investigation against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The police have been instructed to collect the posters and take necessary measures.

The investigation conducted by the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office revealed that posters and banners were hung in Istanbul, including some mayors who were arrested and removed from office on corruption charges, and calling for illegal rallies and marches.

Following the discovery, the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office sent a letter to the Istanbul Police Department.

The letter stated that the use of materials containing İmamoğlu’s photo, video and voice on metro, bus and sea transport was banned.

The letter demanded that these posters and banners be collected and necessary measures be taken.

After İmamoğlu’s arrest, announcements were broadcast in metros using his voice.

The announcement read, “I will win this war, God is witness, the great field!”

Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested on March 19 this year.

The charges against him include leading and being a member of a criminal organization, extortion, bribery, illegal access to personal information and falsification of tender results.

The Istanbul Chief Prosecutor’s Office also alleges that the Istanbul mayor, along with many others, obtained illegal profits by extorting money from businessmen and laundered funds from criminal activities.

Ekrem İmamoğlu was considered the main opposition candidate in the 2027 presidential election in Turkey and the main rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

On March 24, he was announced as the official presidential candidate of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in the next presidential election.
