Imran Aliyev Accused of Collaboration in “AbzasMedia Case”; Defendants Reject Charges

A new hearing has taken place in the criminal case against Imran Aliyev, editor of Meclis.info, and civil society activists Elgiz Gahraman and Tamella Musayeva. All three defendants denied the charges at the Baku Serious Crimes Court, where Judge Roman Alekperli presided and prosecutor Jovdat Mehraliyev read the indictment.

According to the prosecution, the Meclis.info website and related social media pages operated without official registration, and the accused allegedly received grants from foreign donors which were not declared to customs and were illegally brought into the country.

They are further accused of using forged documents and allegedly acting in coordination with individuals already imprisoned in the “AbzasMedia case”.

The Ganja Regional Tax Department has been designated as the official victim in the case.

Imran Aliyev, who was arrested on April 19, 2024, rejects all allegations, stating that he is being punished for his work investigating parliamentary activities and overseeing the Meclis.info platform, which focuses on the transparency and accountability of MPs.

Elgiz Gahraman and Tamella Musayeva were later charged in connection with the same case. While not imprisoned, they are currently under police supervision orders.

The charges include:

  • Article 192.2.2 – Illegal business activity with large-scale profit
  • Article 192.2.3 – Committed by an organized group
  • Articles 193-1.3.1 and 193-1.3.2 – Money laundering
  • Article 206.4 – Smuggling by an organized group
  • Article 213.2.1 – Tax evasion by an organized group
  • Articles 320.1 and 320.2 – Document forgery and use of forged documents

The next court hearing is scheduled for June 17.
