Charles University Rector: “We Will Seek Opportunities for International Support for Bahruz Samadov”

Milena Králíčková, the Rector of Charles University, has issued a public letter regarding the sentencing of the university’s PhD student, Bahruz Samadov, who is currently imprisoned in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Published on the university’s official website, the letter expresses “deep concern” over the case of Samadov, who was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of high treason by the Azerbaijani authorities.

“Today, we must take a stand against such a harsh and politically motivated verdict against our student. We support Bahruz Samadov and express our solidarity with him and his family,” wrote Králíčková.

The rector added that the university will continue to follow the case closely and will explore avenues for international support through partner institutions and organizations.

Bahruz Samadov is a PhD student at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University. He is known for his academic work on the Armenia–Azerbaijan conflict and for publishing critical analyses of the Azerbaijani government.

On June 23, Samadov was sentenced to 15 years in prison under charges of “high treason” based on alleged cooperation with Armenian intelligence services.

Samadov has denied all charges, stating in court that he is a pacifist and an advocate for peace. He emphasized that his writings and public statements have consistently opposed war and promoted peaceful resolution of conflicts. According to Samadov, the accusations are baseless and politically motivated, aimed at silencing his voice through fabricated charges.
