AXCP Member Detained, Party Says Arrest Is Politically Motivated

Another member of the opposition Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (AXCP) has reportedly been detained, raising concerns about the ongoing crackdown on political dissent in the country.

According to a statement from the AXCP, youth activist Aqshin Abdullayev (also known as Aqshin Oghuz), a member of the party’s Youth Committee, was sentenced to 30 days of administrative detention by the Binagadi District Court.

The party claims that Abdullayev was targeted and “framed” for expressing critical views, although no specific details of the allegations against him have been disclosed publicly.

AXCP reports that Abdullayev was summoned to the 40th Police Department of the Binagadi District Police Directorate on June 24, and has since been unreachable.

Authorities have not commented on the case or provided information regarding the grounds for his detention.

The AXCP currently reports that 20 of its members are behind bars. Azerbaijani human rights organizations estimate that there are approximately 375 political prisoners across the country’s penitentiary system.

Officials, however, consistently deny these allegations, insisting that no one in Azerbaijan is imprisoned for their political beliefs or professional activities.
