On June 1, a peaceful protest calling for justice in the suspicious death of 17-year-old Elgün İbrahimov was met with harsh police intervention near the 28 May metro station in Baku. Protesters report being harassed, insulted, and subjected to verbal sexual abuse while detained at the Nasimi District Police Department.
Elgün, a high school student, was found fatally injured in an abandoned dormitory in Ganja. Authorities claim he died from a fall, labeling it a suicide. His family insists he was beaten to death, demanding an independent investigation.
Multiple young people, including minors and university students, were detained for hours. Witnesses describe intimidation, threats, and attempts to coerce them into accepting the official version of Elgün’s death. Female protesters say they experienced degrading sexual comments by officers.
Phones were confiscated, accounts accessed, and personal information recorded without consent. Some detainees reportedly faced health issues but were ignored. At least 60–70 people were held, including a 13-year-old.
Civil society activists distributing flyers about the case have also been detained. Among them was Nicat Əmiraslanov, who received a 15-day administrative arrest.
Activists fear that Elgün’s death is not being properly investigated and suspect police involvement in a possible cover-up.
