Journalist Ulviyya Ali (Guliyeva), who was arrested in the “Meydan TV case,” says that the Baku Pre-Trial Detention Center where she is being held does not provide her with the conditions for examination. In her letter to the public, she noted that the consequences of the torture she suffered while in detention have become even more serious. “In 2017, a 4mm microadenoma tumor was discovered on my head near the pituitary gland. Since then, I have been examined and treated every year. Since May 7, after the beatings, there has not been a day that goes by without headaches, nausea, dizziness, or blackouts. For this reason, I take 2-3 painkillers a day, but this is not enough for effective treatment,” the journalist writes. Ulviyya Ali says that no expert examination has been ordered regarding the violence she suffered during her detention: “It has been more than 20 days since the violence, and by extending the time, you can erase the traces of violence, but you cannot erase the damage to my health. Because it manifests itself in other forms,” the journalist says. The journalist notes that no police officer who used violence or threatened her with rape has been punished. “Despite the fact that I was detained at around 11 p.m. on May 6, the protocols state that it was formalized as 3:50 a.m. on May 7. An illegal search was conducted at my house without a lawyer, and 6,700 euros were allegedly found in my house. However, this money does not belong to me. I generally do not use Azerbaijani manat in cash. Especially in a country where more than 30 journalists have been arrested for the same motives, it is foolish to keep the money at home, even if it belongs to me,” the letter states. Journalist Ulviyya Ali was detained on May 6. The next day, by the decision of Judge Sulhana Hajiyeva, the Khatai District Court sentenced her to 1 month and 29 days of preventive detention. She was charged under Article 206.3.2 of the Criminal Code (smuggling committed by a group of persons in prior collusion). Ulviyya Ali pleads not guilty, stating that she was arrested for her journalistic activities.
