Ahmad Mammadli at Risk of Losing His Sight

Doctor at detention center warns of serious health deterioration

Ahmad Mammadli, a civic activist and founder of Yoldash Media, is at risk of losing his eyesight, according to a statement released by his Defense Committee.

The committee reported that a doctor who examined Mammadli at the detention center warned that he could lose vision in one eye. To prevent further deterioration, the doctor emphasized the need for Mammadli to maintain a strong immune system. He is currently on a high-calorie diet and taking vitamins.

The committee says that Mammadli sustained serious injuries to his eye as a result of torture inflicted during his arrest by police on 6 May 2025:

“More than a month has passed, yet his vision in the affected eye remains blurred. His immune system has also been severely weakened due to the torture. A few years ago, Ahmad Mammadli underwent two eye surgeries, and he suffers from genetic asthma. Because of his asthma, he has difficulty breathing in detention and relies on prescribed medications. The prison environment is unsuitable for his health, and we demand his immediate transfer to house arrest.”

On 8 May, a court ordered Mammadli to four months of pre-trial detention.

He is charged under Articles 126.2.4 (intentional infliction of serious bodily harm) and 221.3 (hooliganism involving a weapon or items used as a weapon) of the Criminal Code.

Ahmad Mammadli rejects the charges, saying he is being persecuted for his past political and civic activities and his current work as a journalist.
